I’ve been asked to translate the pattern for the baby cap. Here it is. English understanding people – I hope you will enjoy it and I hope to see a lot of nice caps around! Thanks to Theresa. She made the traslation.
Gauge: 28 stitches = 10 cm
Yarn: 50 grams of light and dark pink yarn, baby weight.
Sizes: 6 mo (1) 2 yr
CO 121 (125) 131 stitches with 2.5 mm circular needle, join then knit 7 rounds in garter stitch (purl one round, then knit one round) then change to 3 mm needles and knit in stockinette stitch, changing colors every 2 rows.
On the next round, increase and decrease as follows:
k1, M1, k18 (18) 19, slip 1 – knit 2 tog tbl – psso, k 18 (19) 20, M1, k1, M1
k 18 (19) 20, slip 1 – knit 2 tog tbl – psso, k 18 (19) 20, M1, k1, M1, k 18
(19) 20, slip 1 – knit 2 tog tbl – psso, k 18 (18) 19, M1, k1
Repeat these increases and decreases every other round for 8 (9) 10 more rounds. Then do only the decreases every other round until there are 7 (11) 11 stitches left. Then k2tog until only one stitch is left, break yarn and thread through remaining stitches.
Steam block the cap from the inside with a damp cloth over. Attach crocheted or I-cord ribbon in each side.

What an adorable baby hat! Thank you so very much, for the pattern.
But I’m so confused, maybe because I’m fairly new to knitting.
I’ve never had any problems yet, understanding a pattern but when I read this one I just don’t get it, sorry.
When I change to the 3 mm needle size, I start doing the inc./dec. rows right away? Yet it says that when you change to the 3 mm needles, you knit in stockinette stitch?
It states, «Repeat these increases and decreases every other round» What do I do on every other round after the inc./dec. round? Straight knitting?
Then later it says: «Then do only the decreases every other round, etc….»
To me I can only see what looks like one continuous round of mixed increasing, and decreasing. I don’t see a round of only decreasing.
And if I’m decreasing on every other round, do I do straight knitting on the other round? Thus, every other round?
I would be so very grateful, if somebody could please clarify all of this for me. My email address is below.
I would love to be able to make this cute little hat for my grandson, but I can’t understand the instructions.
Please if you could possibly email me with some help on how to knit this hat with specifics in regards to my questions above, I would appreciate it soooooo much.
My email address is: queen_gueneviere@yahoo.ca Please put at the top, «Sweet Baby Cap» so that I’ll know it’s not spam. Thank you so very much to anybody who can help me out. I’ll be so very grateful to have some help so that I can understand the directions, and be able to make this hat for my grandson. :) Thank you, thank you, thank you, to whomever is kind enough to email me, with help on this.

Thanks for doing this! I had a similar pattern that I knit about 50 times for my boys, used heavier yarn when they got bigger.
Now I’m going to be a Granny, and I can’t find that pattern. I’d been playing around trying to rebuild it, and getting not too far, with no baby’s head to try it on.
I really wanted to knit it as the little point in the front kept their foreheads warm.
What a lot of work you saved me! Thanks for being so generous.

Here’s a french translation.

Hi! My name is Marina and I’m Portuguese. I tried to knit this cap but I’m not very familiar with the english knitting abreviations. So, it doesn’t seem right, I always have some stitches left at the end of the row… Can you e-mail me the meaning of the english abreviations, please? It would be great! Thank you!

I have translated your pattern to Spanish for the ladies from my knitting group who doesn’t speak English, and I will like to share it in my blog, with your permission and crediting you of course. Is it ok with you if I do so? Please email me to tejiendoenlaisla@gmail.com.

So glad to find this pattern in English! I just returned from a trip to Iceland where I saw so many babies wearing this hat and desperately wanted to find the pattern but the shops there only had it in Scandinavian languages (my husband knows Icelandic OK but probably not well enough to translate a knitting pattern for me). So thank you!

I tried to knit the stich into the back loops and in front loops and still I get a hole. I see in all the pictures posted that nobody has those holes into the hat. please, HELP MEEEEEEE:)
Any sugestions to not get holes into hat would be greatly appreciated and can be mailed to gloriamix@yahoo.com.

Hello,
I haven’t knit for over twenty yrs.,but now have a new grandchild. I’m puzzled about the abbreviations tbl. also, when I’m starting the pattern of increase and decrease, after I knit 18 then m1, k1, m1. I read the other questions and see that m1 means increase or make one, but the first m1 .do I do this from the last stitch of the 18? and then I don’t know what the tbl means after knit 2 tog tbl I know that knit 2 tog and what psso means, but I have never seen tbl. Your pattern is just great. My son in law is Finnish and this will be perfect for the arrival. Thanks for the time to answer. Kate

Dear Gro
Thanks for the nice pattern. I have a single comment on the english translation, since I had some questions, but was able to read the original pattern in norwegian and got the answers.
It says:
«Repeat these increases and decreases every other round for 8 (9) 10 more rounds.»
I believe it should be:
«Repeat these increases and decreases every other round 8 (9) 10 more times.»
Just my little comment – I will continue my hat ;-)

hi, I’m Italian,
I translated instruction for the baby cap!
I found a foto and the link to this site here:
http://blog.leiweb.it/hobby-e-casa/2009/09/28/cappellino-e-guanti-da-folletto/
Campione: 28 pti=10 cm.
Filato: 50gr di lana baby in rosa chiaro e scuro
Taglia: 6mesi-1anno-2anni
good knitting!

HI. I love this hat and appreciate it being a free pattern. Thank you thank you thank you! And I appreciate the translation too. I have a question. When you repeat the increase/decrease rows and the knit row alternating for 8 more rows, is that 8 times or is that 8 total rows which would only be about 4 more increase/decrease rows?
15 oktober 2011, kl. 6:20 pm |
@Jill ~ that is 8 more times. You will end up with 9 decreases/9 increases before you start to decrease only.

Hi, I’m working on the hat at the moment and I’m a bit confused – when you get to only knitting the decreases, you do still knit 18 etc, is that right? After the first round of decreases I’ve gone down to 115 stitches so I can’t follow the pattern exactly as before. Also, what length i-cord would be good for the 6 month size? I’d be very grateful for some help! Thank you.
